E-commerce Store Fixes 'Invisible to AI' Problem
AI was recommending competitors instead of their products. The query simulator showed exactly why.
The problem: AI kept recommending competitors
Outdoor Essentials sells camping and hiking gear. When they asked ChatGPT "what's the best lightweight backpacking tent," it recommended three competitors. Outdoor Essentials wasn't mentioned.
They sell a lightweight backpacking tent. A good one. But AI didn't know that.
Finding the real issue
They used AI Lens to run queries their customers might actually ask:
- "best two-person backpacking tent under $300"
- "lightweight camping gear for beginners"
- "what tent should I get for Appalachian Trail hiking"
For every query, AI recommended competitors. Every single one.
When they looked at why, the problem was obvious. Their product pages had almost no useful information.
The tent page said: "Ultralight 2-person tent. Built for adventure. Free shipping."
Compare that to a competitor's page: "2-person backpacking tent weighing 2.4 lbs. Fits two adults comfortably. Sets up in under 3 minutes. Waterproof to 3000mm. Ideal for three-season use on trails like the AT and PCT."
The competitor gave AI everything it needed. Outdoor Essentials gave it nothing.
What they fixed
They rewrote their top 20 product pages with actual details:
- Specific weights (not "ultralight" but "2.6 lbs packed")
- Exact dimensions ("fits two adults up to 6'2"")
- Use cases ("designed for backpacking trips of 3+ days")
- Who it's for ("ideal for hikers who prioritize weight over features")
They also added Product schema with price, availability, and ratings.
The result: now recommended for key queries
Two weeks after the changes, they ran the same queries again.
"Best lightweight backpacking tent" now included their tent in the response.
"Two-person tent for Appalachian Trail" mentioned them specifically.
They went from invisible to recommended for their most important product queries.
What you can take from this
For e-commerce, the details matter:
- Include specific specs. Weight, dimensions, materials. Not just "high quality."
- Describe use cases. When would someone use this? Who is it for?
- Add Product schema. It takes a few minutes per page and it helps AI understand what you're selling.
If AI is recommending competitors instead of you, compare your product pages to theirs. The gap is usually in the details.
